Gave blood for the first time in almost 20 years today. I realized it's a "why not" sort of thing after this other guy at work was talking about how he does it every chance he gets.

Plus you get some free juice and cookies at the end. And I got to charge an hour of work time to overhead, since it was "company sponsored".

On top of all that, I feel like my beer is hitting me harder than normal.

I get to be a good person, eat free cookies, and get drunk fast. Giving blood is the best!

HAHAHAH FOR sure. BEER!!! i try to give as soon as posssible. But with my most recent blood exposure ( i work in a lab) i have to wait a year : (. Good for you!!!

P.S. I had my blood tested the following week after donating. ( i work in a lab) and it was back to normal. so no worries is what i;m saying. I'be been drinkgin i think. : G

I have started giving as often as I can. Last two times I gave Double Reds. That's fun...

My daughter had me sign a waiver so she could give blood at school. She came home and went to take a nap. and wondered why she was so tired. I asked if she gave blood and she said yeah, but only 1/3 bag because the guy was doing it wrong. Hmmm... So I asked if she was a bit anxious before and she said she was pretty scared, so I assume she was just coming down from an adrenaline rush.

Hopefully she isn't scared because 1 guy couldn't keep the needle in her vein.

I am going to bleed today after work. I try and donate at least 4 or 5 times a year. Being O +ve, they like my blood whole, but the A's and B's sometimes are asked if they want to donate plasma or platelets instead. Depends on stock levels I suppose.

My genius idea to increase donors was to team up with a local brewery or pub and have a "Give a pint, get a pint" promotion. Donate blood, then receive a coupon for a free drink! I don't see anything wrong with this idea, do you?

Thanks for donating, a lot of people need that blood.

Don't want to argue about the morality of this,

but donating plasma is even better, because you get paid for it and still free capri sun and crackers. A little bit scummy, but its decent money for what you are doing, and at the end of the day somebody is using your blood plasma for something that is keeping them alive.

its cool as heck

Not in Canada. We are strictly volunteer for all blood and blood product donations (whole blood, plasma, platelets, even marrow).

So, no moral issues up here. Donate what you wish, the reward is the same: a bowl of soup, some cookies and a genuine 'thank you'.

I have only donated 11 times, but I hope to keep this up as a regular habit.

Rogue in Newport, OR does pints for pints every year and turnout is pretty good

I donate roughly every two months, unless I do a double red. I figure I can make the stuff pretty quickly and someday I may need a refill myself. The headrushes are fun for the first 24 hours and the beer definitely hits quicker.

I was wondering what the procedure was for finding a place to sell plasma... or if I should simply donate it at red cross drives? Can I do that?

My reasoning is that I'm AB+ which is basically useless as far as donations go (AB's are universal receivers but our blood can only be given to other AB's) BUT we're the universal plasma donor according to the Red Cross blood type website so I figure I might as well get mine out there....

I give plasma twice a week. I do get paid, but I don't get the goodies. The money comes in handy- it is my slush fund for when I feel like getting new toys. :)

Out of curiousity, what do you get per donation? The closest place to me to donate plasma is 20 miles and they said it's $20 per. From what I've read, that's lower than average.

I get $20 for the first donation of the week, and $30 for the second. Right now there is a frequency promotion going on where you get an extra $10 on your 5th donation of the month, and $30 on your 7th. So, if I don't miss any appointments, I get $240/month.

Plasma donation is subject to supply and demand like everything else. Before the recession hit, there were all kinds of promotions to get people to donate, and I could get close to $300/month. When the bubble burst, EVERYBODY started donating, so the price went down to $20 per. Plus the clinics hours were slashed. Now, like everything else, plasma donating is getting more profitable, at least a little bit.

Everyone, thank you all for your generous donations. My good friend (and neighbor) is in the final stages of colon cancer and has needed more transfusions than I've ever heard of. Given this I've started looking in to donating as well.

Thanks again!
