The Gimp is cool application..I was checking out Inkscape (vector graphic app) theres a good podcast tutorial at http://screencasters.heathenx.org/

I use Inkscape when I need to make quick icons and buttons in my programming gig, I suck at artistic stuff but I can at least churn out some semi-useful stuff until design gets back to me.

I've been using the gimp for years, love it!
