Hi Guys,

I am looking to get more serious with my homebrewing and I recently had a chance to get some old corny kegs and C02 tanks at an auction.

I have these 4 C02 tanks. They are old and empty. Are they worth anything? I'd hate to scrap them if they could be sold and converted into more beer! Or...maybe I could use one for my kegs when I start using them?

Thanks for your help! Let me know what you think!

I see...

I did not realize that the tanks can expire. I guess they would have to be retested before they could be filled.

I am going to post these on CL and see if there is any interest, if not I guess I will scrap them. I do have one that was made in '03 and looks like it is in good shape. I might keep that one for myself and try to get it filled.

They can be tested and re stamped, right?

If you plan to keg, don't get rid of them. They can be used. I had a bunch of old tanks. The place where I go - a major gas business - simply swaps them out for up-to-date- tanks. In the past, I had to have a tank tested, etc., but in the end the place filled it. Check your local gas businesses.

OK, will do.

I have 5 of them that I got for almost nothing. What would you guys say tanks this size are worth?

I will probably keep one for myself.

+1 on this comment. I took a 30 year old tank to a local gas place. They swapped it out for a filled tank, no questions asked. They did the same thing for my 02 tank as well, in fact they swapped it out from steel to aluminum at my request. You scored nice with the fuggly tanks, hold on to them, swap them, trade them, they're good to have around.

The 5 lb ones- used for maybe $50, 10 lb one -$80. The green one looks like an 02 tank, keep that one and get a regulator and airstone to oxygenate the wort. Nice find!

If the green one is an 02 tank, a gas place won't fill it if it has any sort of medical labeling on it. If so, go to a scuba diving place. I went to one with an old medical 02 tank and the guy filled it, no problem. Keep the tanks and put them to use!

I did exactly what Cioffi recommended with an old tank I was given. Take it in and swap it out for a new one like you would a propane tank. Just make sure your getting back the same size tank in return.
