Why don't any of the homebrew stores carry five gallon buckets anymore? I had to go to Lowes.

Probably because they can't make a profit off of them, knowing that most folks can get them cheap or free elsewhere.

Home brew buckets are usually 6.5 gallons to allow room for krausen on 5 gallon batches. I imagine they aren't too profitable and shipping is probably expensive.

I stopped at my LHBS last weekend, was surprised to see over 5 dozen buckets on the floor.

I wasn't shopping for anything but still came home with some yeast and hops. go figure!

You can also out your local soft-serve shop(s), they likely have a bunch of 6 gallon frozen strawberry buckets for $5 if they dont give them away. My parents owned a seasonal shop in Michigan and we had food grade buckets coming out of our ears

Some places will give you the 4 gallon square food grade buckets too. They are good for smaller batches.

Exactly. You can’t ferment 5 gallons in a 5 gallon bucket, just like you can’t boil 5 gallons in a 5 gallon pot.
