Hi All! I have been looking thruogh the forums for some time now, and finally decided to join (and ask a question that I couldn't find through searching).

I am planning to do my first partial mash recipe and have found one online that I liked. I just had a question about the grains to use and the amount of hops for this particular style - tripel IPA. Here is the receipe that I will be using for a 5 gal batch:

5.5 lbs Belgian Pilsner Malt
.5 lbs Wheat Malt
5 lbs Extra light DME
1.25 lbs Sugar (regular table sugar)
.5 oz Columbus (60 min)
.25 oz Columbus (45 min)
1.5 oz Saaz (15 min)
.25 oz Columbus (10 min)
.5 oz Columbus (0 min)
Wyeast 1214 (in starter, of course)

.5 oz Columbus (dry hop)
1 oz Amarillo (dry hop)

The question is should I use the grains listed above, or do a combination of Pilsner and Belgian 2 row instead – maybe 3lbs each?

And since this is my first “tripel IPA,” do you think I should add more bittering hops or leave as is?

Thank you in advanced for the help!

I'd use the grains in the recipe. It looks fine the way it is.

I don't think you have enough bittering hops, though. I don't have any brewing software on this laptop, but I'd calculate the probable OG and then using the AAUs on the hops, make sure there were enough IBUs to support the OG.

That does look short on bittering. Also, are you doing a full boil? If not, you could be even more short on the bittering.

Thank you both for the responses!

I will leave the grains as is. Yes, I will be doing a full boil. I thought the amount of bittering hops sounded too short. Maybe I'll do 2 oz of Columbus at 60 and .5 oz of Saaz at 45 min (instead of Columbus), then leave the rest as is?
