I started my first batch of brew today, very interesting. I learned more by actually doing it than reading about it. First rookie mistake, ran out of ice during my chill. Second rookie mistake, didn"t tak an O.G. reading before pitching my yeast. Took the hydro reading about 30 minutes after pitching the yeast, but I sanitized everything pretty good so I'm not worried about that. Mistakes made, lessons learned, I hope I have this much fun everytime I brew. Now for the hard part, Waiting. By the way, I'm brewing a Belgian white I found a recipe for with an oatmeal minimash and wheat malt extract. I thank every one who has helped me get this far, I only hope the beer is half as good as I am excited. Thanks again every one.:mug:

You're like me. I learn much more by doing (and making mistakes, unfortunately). The waiting does suck, though. But, it is worth it, in the end.

I brewed my first batch and forgot to get an OG reading, fermentation already started 4 hours after putting the cap on, is it too late to find out what the ABV will be? It's been 24 hours

You can get a rough approximation of the ABV. You have to know your yeast's attenuation (and assume the fermentation went that way). Then, back track to your OG. So, if you have a FG of 1.010 and a yeast that attenuates at 75%, then your OG is 1.040 (again, making the assumption that the yeast attenuated fully). Use those 2 numbers to approximate.

Maybe one of the pros will come up with a better answer.
