I brewed my first beer tonight. I've made a lot of wine, but this is the first beer. I tried the Mexican Pilsner Kit from Austin Home Brew. SG came out just right. Color was darker than expected. I know the extract makes the beer darker, but this was dark. It smells and looks good otherwise. Now, the waiting is the hardest part.

It probably looks darker in your fermenter than it will in a glass in about 6 weeks. Look into late extract addition and you can get it even lighter. Good job on your first beer!

I agree with what VTBrewer says. I believe you can add about 25% of your extract at the beginning of the boil, and the rest with 15 minutes left. Someone correct me if im wrong. This should keep your color in check

You really need to wait until it is in the glass. This is an extremely light beer using extremely light ingredients. Beer always looks darker when it is concentrated or in bulk.

The extract used has a lovibond of 2. 2-row which is the lightest grain has a lovibond of 1.8. The mexican pilsner kit is also half brewer's corn syrup which is clear. The batch will be extra light when you are ready to drink it. As light or lighter than all-grain.

People will mention late addition as an option. This method was created for a problem that doesn't exist with the right extract. Some stores sell Muntons liquid extract or extract in a can. Briess Pilsen extract is over 3 times lighter than Muntons or extract in a can. With a lovibond rating that is the same as 2-row base grain, late addition brewing is not really needed. Munton's or extract from a can just cannot be made light enough even with late addition.
