Well I finally got to fire up my kettle and brew our first batch as Father n Son. Since I had so much fun brewing at the Flying Barrel in Frederick it was time to fire up our first batch with some equipment I scored on Craigslist back in January. It's an 8 gallon Polarware pot with a 3/4 Ball valve I just installed. I also added a 1 1/2" hole in the lid for the sparge funnel. My Son just returned from almost 9 yrs overseas serving in the Air Force and he is home for good to use his college money and finish his degree. We chose the Broken Halo recipe since it seemed pretty simple and we like the Belgian style. 3hrs total including cleaning worked out real well.
For the Kettle I used a 1/4" drill then a uni bit to open it up to around 15/16". Then I took a compression fitting to work and took the angle off the hex part and give it a nice flat area to mate up to the kettle. It fit so nice and tight by tightening up the compression fitting on the inside (minus the ferrels) I didn't need to have it welded and never leaked a drop.
And we had a celebratory Victory Beer during the boil of course.
