Currently my beer is fermenting in a bright room but not in direct sunlight. Is this okay or should it really be in a dark space?

I think it depends on the bulbs. I believe some emit UV light which is bad. If you use buckets you probably have nothing to worry about.

Indirect sunlight could still be a problem.

Cover them up. I use the boxes my Better Bottles came in. Cut out the bottom and cut a hole for the airlock or blow off tube.
 
Yep, a towel or two will do it. If you're really worried, cover it with aluminum foil.
