I just designed a partial mash recipe and wanted to get some feed back on it before I brew it.. Would you change anything?

Partial Mash:
5.5 lbs American 2 row
.5 lb crystal 20L
Mash @ 150 for 60 mins
3lbs DME briess golden light

Yeast:
WLP001

Hops:
Magnum 1oz- 60min

Amarillo 1oz- whirlpool
Centenial 1oz- whirlpool
Columbus 1oz- whirlpool
Simcoe 1oz- whirlpool

Amarillo .5oz- dry hop
Centenial .5oz- dry hop
Columbus .5oz- dry hop
Simcoe .5oz- dry hop

That's a lot of hops. All bittering and aroma, no flavoring (at like 15 minutes)?

OK, and just how tall are you? Five-foot sixteen inches, or more?

We have a Bell's Two-Hearted clone here that is really good for comparison BTW.

This is a great beer

Looks pretty good to me. What's your whirlpool plan? Time, temps etc. That will have a pretty big impact on your flavors as well as IBU.

I don't do any boil hops other than my 60 minute bittering because I don't have a chiller. I figure that with the amount of time it takes me to chill my wort with an ice bath I should get plenty of flavor and aroma out of my whirlpool hops.

Thoughts?

"Thoughts?" - Besides "get a chiller"? :)

You can certainly get a lot of flavor and aroma from whirlpool hops - eg Stone IPA. You'll also get some additional bittering. There is no doubt that you can make a good, hoppy beer this way.

The downside of your general plan is predictability and repeatability. The hops will react differently depending on the temps and time. You'll have basically uncontrolled temps and variable cooling times. You can make this recipe 5 times and up with a surprisingly wide range of flavor profiles. All 5 might be great, but it batch #3 is your favorite, it will be hard to determine what sets it apart for the others.

I'm going to buy chiller because I want to be able to repeat my recipes.

I'm still thinking about doing the same hop regiment but letting the hops whirlpool for 15 mins then starting my immersion chiller. Do you think that's long enough? I'm not sure how quickly my chiller will work?

You can build a chiller for $45 worth of 3/8" copper tubing and supplies from your local home supply store.

When I whirlpool I start my chiller right at flame out.

Keep a thermometer in the wort as it cools until it hits 180F at which point, in go the whirlpool hops. Takes about another 20 minutes to get down to 65F for yeast pitching. Your tap water temp makes a huge difference in how long it takes to chill the wort.

Thanx for the info. I built a chiller for about $45 like you said. I'll be using it this week. Thanx for the input.

i dunno, i stay away from simcoe unless it's early in the boil. cat piss is not my favorite item on the menu. maybe replace it with chinook, to compliment that amarillo.

Shouldn't get cat pee from simcoe.

Lookin at your hop schedule it looks like you're going for a piney earthy Ipa like stone enjoy by or Pliny. I like using an earthier bittering hop like ctz to get more bitter bite. Magnum will be a pretty soft bitterness, but that's just me.

I was actually thinking about using something different for the bittering hop for that reason. I have some left over magnum in the freezer. I think im going to change it up next bath.

Whats the difference between ctz and Columbus?

I think I'd use whole ounces dry hopping. Simply because I hate having leftovers laying around. Then I feel obligated to brew them into and my "to brew" list is already pretty back logged.

Columbus is the c in ctz.
Columbus, tomahawk, Zeus. All pretty similar hence ctz.

Hi,

Hey Virtus, you should probably start your own thread since this is a completely different recipe. That being said I've never used S. Goldings so I'm not much help here.

I get pine from simcoe, citra is usually associated with cat urine I thought?

Have you actually brewed with Citra? Cat urine is not even close. I get tangerine and papaya when I brew my dry hopped Citra Pale Ale.

I did a summer citra blonde that came pretty close to cat pee. I added simcoe and amarillo the next time I did it and it came out better.
