I bought a couple 5 gallon igloo coolers. One I'm converting to a mash tun with false bottom and ball valve. If I only plan on using the other as a vessel for holding the hot sparge water/strike water, can I just use the original, factory spout with that came with the cooler to pour water into the mash tun? Is it rated for water that temperature or will it leak/become damaged. I may eventually buy parts to add the valve but Id like to, initially, just keep the cost down. Thanks.

You would have to check the manufacturer's specs for that cooler. Some of them are rated for cold and hot water, some are just for cold water.

I have a 10 gallon rectangular cooler that I use as a mash tun. So far it's held up well with water hotter than mash temp for several years. I believe a round cooler ought be be even better suited for this since it's shape and size should translate into a stronger form. (Round sides and smaller bottom).

Generally the seals on those valves are good at not leaking. (Except for the dribble you invariably get when after pouring a drink!)

Personally, I think it would make a very nice hot liquor storage tank.
