Sather handed out tons of bad contract before the salary cap forced him to put more effort into development instead of just trying to outspend everyone. And the answer to where they would be without Lundqvist? Not a cup contender or even a playoff team some years. And if im not mistaken we will see if he is able to keep him, I am pretty sure his is a ufa at the end of the season and has said he is undecided. Richards and Nash's contracts are not gonna help with the cap space since they still have some rfa's without contracts right now

Dude, EVERY team is in a bind with cap space (well the good ones, anyway).

You are saying that he's a bad GM because he spent some rich owners' money back when a salary cap didn't matter. WHO CARES.

Since the lockout they've missed the playoffs once. One time. Slats has been there for 13 years now - you don't keep a crappy GM around for THIRTEEN YEARS. Hell, Burke pulled the Leafs out of ridiculous ineptitude in 4, and he still got fired.

Sather isn't even in the bad GM category - and you bring his name up as one of the worst in the league? That's crazy talk sir!

Im saying hes a bad gm because overall the teams he put together underachieve. And if you look at how he spent before the lockout and the results there are alot of similarities with john ferguson jr, and if he would have lucked out and got a hof player in the late rounds( like lundqvist) would that have made him a good gm?

I don't get it. If the only measure of a good GM is winning the cup, then you live in a world where there are 29 ****ty GMs every year. Anyway have fun with that.

I never said that.
To me a measure of a good gm is putting together a balanced consistent team with a clear plan while being smart financially.
If you look at his track record before 2005 his plan seemed to be to just outspend everyone and sign the biggest names available. Most of these players were on the downswing career wise which led to either just making or just missing the playoffs. Which meant that any player they drafted was mid first round, being a few years away from making an impact, if at all. EXACTLY like john fergusen did in toronto. Lundqvist was a fluke draft.....7th round. you cant say he was expected to be a franchise goalie. If sather knew he was this good but waited till late rounds to draft him and risked another team picking him then he should be fired for that alone.
Current rangers team is showing improvement but brad richards was given a big contract and has not performed up to standard. He traded for rick nash, a player with another big contract who put up decent goal totals for cbj, but now that hes not the only on the team who can score his totals have dropped, and he does not have a history of being a playmaker.
Derek Stepan was drafted by the rangers in the 2nd round and was the leading scorer last season. But he is not in camp because he is unsigned and snould get a nice raise over the $875k he earned last season.
Lundqvist is a ufa at the end of the season and does not want to negotiate during the season. If he goes to free agency and a team with a better cup chance offers more money than the rangers can why would he turn it down?
Once/if Stepan is signed and you consider the contracts of nash and richards how much is left? Lundqvist made $6.8m this year and you gotta think that is just a minimum starting point for the next contract. The team knew all season that the cap was dropping next season, so that is no excuse for not being prepared. Managing the cap is a big part of a gm's job now and imo sather has done just ok, nothing to really make him stand out from anyone else.

Now give me reasons why he is "so great."

The Rags have been a disaster? They have been Stanley Cup contenders for years.

Just my opinion but this is a stretch. On paper the rangers may have been cup contenders but in reality they've a team of over paid under achievers back stopped by an awesome goaltender.

But I'm just a life long isles fan so you can just ignore me! :)

Just to be clear. You mentioned Sather as being the worst GM in the NHL. 30th out of 30. The WORST ONE. Ugh... I can't believe I'm defending the New York ******* Rangers - I feel so dirty.

I never said that.
To me a measure of a good gm is putting together a balanced consistent team with a clear plan while being smart financially.

What does being "smart financially" mean? Does it mean not handing out bad contracts now that there's a Salary Cap? Because it seems that with all the terrible deals given out, these GMs keep finding ways to get out of them. The cap is more of a nuisance than anything else. In 5 years it'll be so high that it won't even matter anymore, anyway.
Does it mean not spending so much that you can't afford other players? Because this doesn't apply in New York. It's a problem in Phoenix and Dallas sure, but not in the big apple.

But lets look at the terrible deals that supposedly hamstrung the Rags from being successful:
Holik - bought out, not my money, don't care.
Gomez - managed to trade him to Montreal in a moment of amazing wizardy.
Redden - was buried in minors, bought out, again not my money, don't care.
Drury - man did this guy suck after being paid $7M/season. Big Sather mistake for sure.

The Rangers would sign the top free agents available every summer. They'd throw out huge $$ because they could afford it. What do we care if someone wants to spend that much money? His boss certainly doesn't.

EXACTLY like john fergusen did in toronto.

What? No. Ferguson could never land those top players because he was too busy handing out NTC's like candy to the current aging core. I think you're thinking of Quinn before the cap - the Leafs would move 1st round picks and replace that talent with UFAs because they could afford to. But again - not my money so I really don't care who spends what.

Sather brought in Jagr for... Anson Carter. Yeah. Jagr was a beast for them. He also got Bure for something so insigificant I can't even think of what it was, and Lindros wasn't a FA he was traded for nothing as well. Bure was then destroyed by injuries and same with Lindros, but that's not really the GM's fault.

Lundqvist was a fluke draft.....7th round.
Sure. So they got lucky there, like Detroit with Zetts. But you know what - they still got them, and 29 other teams didn't. Now cherry-pick the Rags' good picks in rounds 1-3 please.

BRAD RICHARDS SUCKS
There were 4 teams all trying to sign this guy for ridiculous money if I recall correctly. If Sather is a bad GM for this, then so is Feaster, Burke, Lombardi, and Yzerman. Once again, the Rags landed the #1 UFA on the market.
If they did say they made a mistake and bought him out this summer, guess who would have automatically become the top UFA again? This isn't really a mistake - lets see what happens in a full season.

NASH SUCKS
This guy was traded for Anisimov, Dubinsky, and a first. He also got 42 points in 44 games last season (21G 21A). How is that anything but good? Again - we need to see what a full season can bring.

Now give me reasons why he is "so great."
He's not "so great". He's no magician. He's made several mistakes that hindsight can easily point out, but he's also done some good things. Most importantly, he's done a good enough job to stay in NY for 13 years, which is pretty damn good in a world where most people with the same job don't even get their 5-year pin.

You said he is one of the worst, if not THE WORST, and that is extremely far-removed from reality. Now drop the effing puck so we can all watch some hockey!

Of course he got nash cheap, he asked to be traded which lowers the return significantly.
As far as " not my money ,who cares" not every owner has the money to continually absorb these contracts. Wanna guess one of the reasons ticket prices keep going up? It sets a standard for other negotiations.
Being smart financially would managing the cap to be able to keep your most valuable players. Im still not convinced he is going to be able to afford lundqvist. Of course alot of teams wanted Nash, he is a top goal scorer, but his contract is ridiculous. Alot of teams passed because of it. It could very well end up costing the rangers Lundqvist. Bobby ryan is younger and puts up comparable numbers for $2mill less. And if you believe some commentators he was available at the same time
Sather and James Dolan have been very good friends for a long time.job security is alot easier in that situation.

And the oil will make the playoffs this year

Bwahahaha, Tim Thomas is "trying out" for Florida. **** that guy, and shame on Florida for allowing it, though I do understand why they're so desperate.

Not sure who raised him to god status in Boston, tuuuuk has been the better of the two since he signed. I'm grateful for his Stanley cup winning luck, but short of that... good luck in Florida.

C'mon, no good can come from re-writing history.

Thomas carried the Bruins to the 2011 Cup and did it standing on his head, as anyone who watched every game will testify. His skills that year were insane.

Unfortunately, he actually went insane, did a bunch of stoopid stuff that crushed his Q rating, and he was "Outta Heeyah". That's life, sh!t happens, some people really do have loose screws.

Last year Tukka had as big a year as Thomas did in 2011 - and Bruins fans loved every bit of it, even if the team came up a bit short of their ultimate goal. Hopefully this season will be as memorable...

Cheers!

What nobody commenting on how awesome their team is in preseason??

I KNOW there have to be some Philly or Boston fans champing at the bit to extol their teams virtues this early in the preseason...

Sens are undefeated this year! I think they have a realistic shot to go 82-0 this year.

Considering buying Game Center Live for a few reasons, not least of which because I ditched cable. It even works on a Roku. $149.99 for 8 months

That's what I do. I use unblock-us to un-blackout the games. You will need a VPN to do this - especially since the good games are usually nationally-broadcasted so they're blacked out all over N. America.

Picture quality is better than I ever got with cable. I use an Apple TV.

It's fun to check in on Edmonton from time to time.
"Do those guys still suck?"
**puts game on**
"Yup."

I thought about that but, fortunately for me, only Minnesota Wild games will be blocked so I can watch the Hawks no problem. PS3, Roku, and Sony Blu-Ray hooked up to each TV and I have my Android phone. I may actually OD on hockey this year, if I buy this package.

How do you like it? More importantly, what do you not like about it?

I like a lot about it, I use it on my Xbox, the video quality is great, the stream comes through smooth. The dvr and playback capability is good.

I don't like that you don't get any national televised games, Boston for example either plays on NESN (considered my local broadcaster) or one of the big networks, so even the games that NESN doesn't cover, I don't get live. But for my extremely out of market games (I follow a lot of Detroit games, LA, Chicago etc) it works great.

That said, I have heard that the use a VPN to get all of the blacked out games, works wonderfully. I wouldn't know :drunk:

Great, thanks for the mini-review. I think I'm probably about 90% sold on it. Now, to convince the wife, who was not happy that I ditched cable and all of her Housewife shows. This may take some finagling.

Netflix, Hulu, and gamecenter keep us going. The ability to spread the gamecenter over 8 payments is what sold the wife on it. We don't have cable either.

If you want a really good private torrent site to get all the shows your wife misses (a lot of shows are up within 5-10 minutes after airing) and more (great tracker for everything but music), I have some spare invites provided you're willing to maintain a 1:1 ratio.

Hmm - I'd be careful. Cup-winning Hawks might have a few more national-broadcasted games than usual, leaving you frustrated and cursing at the worst possible time.

If you run in to trouble, check out unblock-us. They have a free 7-day trial (no CC required for trial) and it literally takes 2 minutes to set up. Very easy to do following the website instructions. If it works, then it might be worth the $5/month to keep you going.

Not a bad idea but I'm loathe to pay more just to unblock games. Plus there's free radio broadcasts of the games, so I can listen to the Hawks games that way. I've done that a couple times and it's actually sort of fun, chilling out on a cold night with a warm fire and listening to a sports radio broadcast. Beer doesn't hurt either.

Found out the other day the Sens have a game vs the Caps in November that isn't on TV, anywhere! What the hell? It's 20 friggin 13, and there is a game I can't watch?

Ridiculous.

Are games not televised anywhere available on game centre live, or should I try to find a free stream at somewhere like firstrowsports or something?
