Boston is insane. Really. A team that has it figured out 100%. They've got the perfect mix of role-players, stars, and goaltending it seems. Plus no injuries? WTF, to be so lucky...

If they can keep that team together for a few more years, what they'll be able to accomplish will be pretty ridiculous. Provided they get by the Leafs in the playoffs, that is...

Will we see a Van/Bos final again this year?

Honestly, I had the same thought several days ago. As unusual as it is, I see the same two teams in the finals this year. And unfortunately, I think the same team will win it.

nah, i'm just bustin' yer chops, the bruins are pretty stellar this year. lotta fun to watch too...... which is more than i can say for my 'hawks. f'n colorado, really? really? our local midgets club could beat the avs and they're pitching' the 'hawks a shutout. really?

... and I'm just bustin everyone else's chops. It's a trashtalk thread. It always makes me giggle to see folks get all tied up in a knot on these threads. On a serious note though, c'mon... the B's look good. The only reason the Rangers are ahead on pts right now is that Boston came out of the gates at the beginning of the season. Since then they are in an obnoxious pace. They've lost.. What.. 2 of the their 25 games or something? They are beating teams by wide margins Again, they have the most goals and least against. That's impressive to hold both sides of that. And they look good doing it. They have speed, size... They look good right now.

And if it was a different team in those shoes... Those fans would be on this thread talkin' smack too.

Whatta ya mean "unfortunately"??? C'mon... Throw us Massholes a bone here... We're due for a championship. When's the last time we won any if the four big pro championships?

So no realignment for next year for the NHL, as the NHLPA killed the idea, citing travel and unbalanced conferences as concerns.

This makes me so mad. Not because of the realignment thing, whatever, but because they are negotiating a new CBA this year, and if the PA and Fehr are going to be a**holes about something like this, just wait until they start talking money!

It has never made sense to me why millionaires need a union. It's not like they're working in a coal mine scraping together just enough money to eat and can't afford Tiny Tim's medecine...

I 'Fehr' we will be in for another lockout. Something like that could really hurt the NHL....

Fuss the East Coast teams. We want the cup out here in San Jose.

Yeah, maybe after playoff-no-show-Joe is gone.

The only reason the Rangers are ahead is because the Flyers decided to not play either at all or complete games in any of the three against the Rangers this year. The Winter Classic was the closest to a complete game except for the two soft goals Bob gave up.

This quote right here is why there is a union:
"It is unfortunate that the NHLPA has unreasonably refused to approve a plan that an overwhelming majority of our clubs voted to support, and that has received such widespread support from our fans and other members of the hockey community, including players," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said.

The decision was made above the level of the players. I'm almost 100% anti union in most applications today across the US, but the NHL has a monopoly on the hockey market in North America and really the world, and to dictate everything without any player input isn't really fair due to the contracts the players are signed to. If there were no contracts and players could go wherever they wanted whenever they wanted, then there wouldn't be a need for a union, but the players are practically owned.

"As realignment affects players' terms and conditions of employment, the CBA requires the league to obtain the NHLPA's consent before implementation," Fehr said. "Over the last month, we have had several discussions with the league and extensive dialogue with players, most recently on an executive board conference call on Jan. 1. Two substantial player concerns emerged: whether the new structure would result in increased and more onerous travel; and the disparity in chances of making the playoffs between the smaller and larger divisions.

The travel complaints have to be coming solely from the East. The West, simply due to the nature of geography, has always had more travel.

"In order to evaluate the effect on travel of the proposed new structure, we requested a draft or sample 2012-13 schedule, showing travel per team. We were advised it was not possible for the league to do that. We also suggested reaching an agreement on scheduling conditions to somewhat alleviate player travel concerns ... but the league did not want to enter into such a dialogue."

I'm torn on this because the owners are the ones in charge, sort of, they are subordinate to the league. If the players don't like it, they can play elsewhere. However, the owners don't own anything unique that they have developed, like a software company, auto manufacturer, pharmaceuticals company, etc. They own a team of people they contractually own to play for them. If the terms of the contacts are changed by the league, the players have the right to say whether or not they agree to the changes in their contacts.

This is why the players need a union, the ownership and league officials act like they can do whatever they want simply because they're the owners. That's fine, but the players don't have to play for the NHL. They can go elsewhere to less competitive leagues and less desirable places to live and play. No, it's not ideal, but the owners and league have to respect the fact that the league exists because of the players on the ice, not the name on the building or the concession stands.

Florida player representative Mike Weaver also commented about the move.

"We were prepared for the realignment from the NHL, but we weren't given every bit of information regarding it. How can you make an educated decision without all the proper information?" Weaver said. "We asked for the reasoning and that reasoning was not produced. They were not open to discussions about it.

"As far as travel goes, it's a big important issue. I don't know why the NHL wouldn't make it easier for everyone. More travel means being away from families more. It is going to make it tougher. It's already tough now. I just wish they were fair with us. They didn't want to give us any information about it. We're going to have longer road trips, like 10 days on the road. It's tough enough now and they didn't make it any easier."

Exactly my point. If there is going to be an agreement, the cards need to be on the table for all sides to agree upon them.

Cry me a river about being gone for 10 days for your millions of dollars your volunteered to play for. Boo hoo.

Pittsburgh player rep Craig Adams also stressed that the players want more information.

"The issue is that we asked for some documentation to figure out if they had done any travel projections," Adams said. "We wanted to see how it would change the current set up and if it would change financials. Up to this point, they haven't given us any information. We aren't turning it down outright. "We just haven't seen anything from them that convinced us that it's a good idea."

This is also key - it's not rejected, it's delayed, until all can agree and all details from the league are published. I honestly was shocked the league thought they could do this in less than a year and do it without the consent of the NHLPA.

Florida player rep.
Pittsburgh player rep.

Where's the opinion of the Dallas player rep? I think I'll put about a gazillion dollars on him wanting change.

How about the Columbus player rep, Detroit player rep, and Nashville Player reps? LA? San Jose?

Teams in the East (mine included) are coddled in respect to travel. And not just travel, but time zones.

If I'm living and playing in Dallas, and playing half my games with a 2-hour time zone change, I'm not happy. If I was a fan of Detroit, I wouldn't want so many games starting at 10:00 or 10:30! It's absolutely ludicrous.

You are OK with the millionaire players having a union? Unions exist(ed) to protect workers from unreasonable and dangerous working conditions and unfair pay. Making 850,000 dollars a year to play 5 minutes a game, and being asked to fly around the country and spend 40% of your time on the road is not unreasonable working conditions.

We aren't talking about dangerous conditions in the coal mines with pennies an hour here. Unions as a whole are outmoded 19th century relics, unions for millionaires are ridiculous.

Donald Fehr almost killed baseball, now he's going to kill the NHL...

I'm very pleased that the realignment was shot down for the time being. I think it is a stupid idea and unnecessary. The worst part about it was the playoff scheme. I don't want the NHL to end up like the MLB, where if you are stuck in a really strong division then you're ****ed and never making the playoffs. Under these rules Phoenix wouldn't have even made the playoffs last year. I also do not want to see the same playoff series year after year. They say it will create "new rivalries". For me it will create boredeom, seeing pretty much the same teams play eachother in the playoffs all the time.

You know what bothers me about the other argument the players had "Better chances of making the playoffs" is BS too.

If you think of it, you aren't trying to avoid being the bottom 3rd or 4th team, but are trying to be one of the top 4. It doesn't mater how many other's make the playoffs, it only matters if YOU make the playoffs. The argument is flawed.

Also, if you have 8 teams in a conference, and 4 will miss it, than the top teams have more bottom feeders to feast on, thus it is also an advantage to have more teams in your conference.

For example, I would rather have a Columbus in my division of 8. It would be better than having no Columbus in a division of 7. Why? Because it is going to result in more points for me.

The players are only doing this to show how tough they are and how they can be masters of their universe going into the new CBA talks.

I think the NHL should say fine, no realignemnt, but we are not going to allow you to go to the Olympics, because of health concerns. That's not being unreasonable. Look what happened to my Sens when Hasek went to the Olympics and hurt himself. With top notch goaltending, we would have had a good shot at the cup that year.

For me it will create boredeom, seeing pretty much the same teams play eachother in the playoffs all the time.

I think this was easily solved by reseeding after one round, not two, of playoffs. You play a natural geographic rival in the first round (Toronto-Ottawa, Montreal - Boston, Pittsburgh-Philly, etc) and then next round you could play a different conference team.

Six Canucks against Thorton... It blows me away what a galatically huge bunch of pssies Vancouver is.

I lose respect for Vancouver by the second every time I watch them

+1 on no legitimate reason for a player's union. The NHL is hardly a sweat shop.

Team owners are looking for a return on their investment. If they can't get a decent return they generally will sell the team. The union allows players to demand unreasonable mounds of cash. This cash does not come out of the owner's pockets. It comes from higher ticket prices.
