Did an early batch today using some roadside apples, mix of red fleshed crabs, and mostly goodness knows what apples from an old overgrown orchard here in Northamptonshire.
My £10 eBay garden shredder worked brilliantly and did 2 gallons.
The juice has a slightly earthy taste to it and not that sweet even though the fruit was starting to rot on the trees and the pips where brown. Only about 1.040 but I,ll sweeten with sugar when I pitch the yeast in a day or so after the Camden tablets.
Anybody with experience of crab and roadside apples for cider and did it turn out ok?
I may blend it later in October if it's not tasting too good. Any thoughts from anyone about the above or blending as this is only my 2nd year.
Google "Thecidergrove tumblr" for some pictures.
Thanks Simon.
