I just finished brewing my third ever batch, Caribou Slobber from NB, and this was the hydrometer reading. I am still not 100% on reading the hydrometer, so any help is appreciated.

That looks like it is reading somewhere between 1.052 and 1.054. It is hard to see the EXACT reading in the pictures. To read the hydrometer, start at the 1.000 line and count downwards until you reach the level of the beer. The "10" line is equal to 1.010, the "20" line is 1.020, the "30" line is 1.030, and so on...

Each small "tic mark" between the larger numbers represents a reading of .002 Since your beer appears to be touching the first or second tic mark below the "50" line that would read 1.052 or 1.054. If the level of the beer is in between those tic marks, then it would be 1.053.

A gravity reading between 1.052 and 1.054 sounds like it is probably exactly where it is supposed to be.

I hope this helps!

Looks to me like about 1.054. Don't forget to correct for temperature if it's anything other than 60°. There are a lot of calculators out there for that.

looks perfect. NB's slobber kit should be about 1.052.

as long as your sample is at room temperature, from what i can see, it looks like 1.052 or 1.053. many hydrometers also have scales on them for wine. when brewing beer, we're only concerned about the beer scale.

congrats, should end up being one tasty beer.

As a newbie to brewing as well I always find reading my hydrometer a pain! This thread has certainly cleared it up for me though. Cheers guys!
