When looking at the grain ingrediants on a bottle of beer, do brewers list the grains in order of % of the grain bill or is it just any random order?

I ask, as I'm attempting a Schlafly pumpkin clone and the grains listed are Pale, crystal, munich, wheat and chocolate. Final ABV should be around 8%, so I was thinking of the following grain bill based on the order listed:

10 pounds pale 2 row
3 pounds crystal 20
1 pound munich
.5 pound wheat
.25 pound chocolate
3 pounds pumpkin

Thoughts??

I think that in general the base grain is listed first, but I wouldn't extrapolate a lot from the character malts' listing order. From what you've listed above, I would imagine that there would be more munich than crystal.

I would guess something like:
10# Pale
3# Munich
1# Wheat
(Up to) 1# C-20 (3# is a LOT of crystal)
0.25# Choc
3-5# Pumpkin

Just my guess, though.

I didn't read through all of it, but his recipe uses several different crystal malts. Schlafly's site just says crystal though.

I agree with SnakeRidge. You can also look up some different recipes for Pumpkin Ale and do some comparisons to get you more in the ball park. Typcially the "steeping" grains are in much smaller quantities than the stuff you can mash like the Munich or Vienna, which are great substituitons for the a lof of different steeping grains in my opinion.

I have found that 90% of the time, they definitely list the malts in descending %s. And yes 3lbs is a crap load of crystal.

I do list grains by %. Just curious, who came up with 3 pounds of crystal? That thing is going to be a sugar bomb I bet.

Yep. I recently ran into the head brewer from beachwood brewing. He built a recipe for me. It was interesting watching him build a recipe in percentages from grains to ibu's.

I would bet it's in descending order based on amount. I know the alcohol industry isn't required to follow suite, but in the food industry I believe they're required to list the ingredients in order (largest to smallest), at least that's what my nutrition professor told me back in the day.

+1 on reducing the amount of crystal malt...3# is waaaay too much IMO

I do not believe that there is a solid guideline for how malts are listed.

My Gold Medal Imperial Pumpkin from last year had the following:

12 gallon batch
20 lbs of 3L Pale Malt (I use Great Western's Northwestern Pale Ale Malt)
2 lbs of Briess Extra Special (130L)
2 lbs of Flaked Oats
1 lb of Dark Brown Sugar
1 lb of Lactose
7.5 lbs of Pumpkin Puree
10 oz of Black Strap Molasses

I think I would cut the Lactose to 0.5 lb if I was to brew this again.
