DME question

Going on my fifth Extract brew tomorrow....(rebel brewer Hop blaster IPA)
Upon opening the box this evening to start the yeast I noticed no LME only what appeared to look like a 7-8 lb. brick of DME.
Is this the same?? Is it normal??will it still make for a good brew??
 
Yes it's the same, yes it's normal, and yes it will make good beer. Be sure to stir it as you pour it in, and pour it slowly, as it tends to clump.
 
If you want it lighter colored add half or so toward the end of boil,like last 10.Pull it from the boil and stir it in and get it back to boil.
 
DME is simply dried LME, in a per pound measure it will have a higher gravity because there is no water in it - LME is about 20%. Of course LME comes from malt that AG brewers make, and then the water is removed. Then the LME is dried to make DME. And yes a couple of bags of DME would look like the movies lol
 
Some brewers prefer DME over LME, especially for lighter colored beers.

I would say most brewers prefer DME. It ages better and is easier to divide and keep part of.

As far as ease of use, DME can clump up, but if you mix it thoroughly that's not a big problem. LME can layer, stick in the can, and the like, but if you work with it a lot that's not a problem. Most brewers I've worked with like DME better for ease of use, but there's a significant number who absolutely hate it and prefer LME.

LME is cheaper per fermentation unit.

The bottom line is that both can make good beer; there's definitely not an overall consensus as to which is better, but I think if you polled 100 brewers you'd have slightly more who prefer DME than LME.

There is a theory that lme gives a twang flavor and dme does not. Personally I like using dme better but don't have a problem using either. Just experiment and try different kits and you will find a preference.
