DIY Stainless beer tower?

Ive seen the PVC towers here... has anyone built their own stainless steel beer tower? It seems pretty simple to do if you think about it.

You just need a 3" stainless steel pipe, a 3" flange, a 3" cap, and a 1" holesaw for your shanks...

In my mind, it doesn't look cost effective. You're talking $30, just for a 12" pipe. McMasters also has the caps and flanges, but it looks like you would have to weld the flange on. You can get a tower with 2 taps, ready to go for $130.
