Holy smoke! It seems like you had a bad time in Italy... I'm sorry to hear that.
I can confirm from my perception, smoking tobacco is still very popular at our Italian "neighbours".
I'm really not sure, looking for a beer is the best choice for a drink in Italy. But I'm sure there must be some local brewers out there, who do a decent job.
My overall experience in Italy so long: I'm not surprised that a lot of restaurants do serve imported Austrian or German beers. Think about that: the beer per capita consumption is at 36 litres (Germany for example is at 88 - in 2023). During travel restrictions in 2020 the amount there dropped by more than 3 litres - imo a sure sign for the missing foreign beer drinkers from the other side of the Alps.
Anyways, it would have been nice to read about interesting Italian beers you discovered.
Italy is a very traditional wine country and they're very sophisticated about that. Also, they are very proud of their cuisine and stick to the traditions.
For example: oat milk in the coffee is a no go because of the taste: a cappuccino with cow milk is a perfectioned drink. F**k lactose induced diarrhea - if cappuccino with oat or soy tastes less good than the traditional variant, they just don't do it (my perception). They'd rather take some lactase pills, sh*t their pants or change to espresso than going from cow to plant based.
And - as it was mentioned off topic - I'd like to add there my thoughts, too: unfortunately we as humans didn't learn much from the pandemic. The last time I went to my doctor, because I got the flu last autumn, I wore a mask. On the way in another patient laughed at me "this wouldn't protect me". As I said, it's because I am sick and I want to protect others he got quiet.
I agree, few people wear masks nowadays. It would be such an easy and as human being decent thing to do - for the ones who want more protection for themselves and for those who know that they could harm others.
I mean, you also don't just wear a condom to avoid alimony...? Not just the list STIs is long...
