Made the surly cynic from northern brewer today. Smacked the yeast pack before doing ne thing. Then when it came time to put it in realized it didnt really swell like they usually do. Im thinking the yeast might be dead. Has neone had a similar problem? Had it in my fridge for a month. Also wondering if the wort will be allright for a day. Till i have time to buy a new yeast ?

You can always make a starter to test viability

He should ALWAYS make a starter, and one of the many reasons for doing it, is that it proves viability.

If he makes a starter he will never start a thread like this again, he won't need to ask us to psychically probe his yeast, he'll know for himself whether it's alive or dead. ;)

Ya. This is the number one reason I started doing starters. Not the number one reason I continue, but the number one reason I started. My first batch took a little longer to kick off that I wanted (being an impatient noob), and I realized that if I made a starter, there would be no wondering if the yeast was alive and functional. :p
