darn ... too much wort

Well, I made an IPA tonight. I calculate a recipe for a moderate gravity for an IPA (1.055) ... I decided to try and get 6 gallons out of this brew, as I have only been getting around 5.25. So I mashed and sparged and boiled .... at then end of the brew session I ended up with 6 gallons ... awesome, I was willing to accept a somewhat lower gravity .

Well I got a 1.054 ... so pretty close to dead on. Well I came back to my ProMash recipe ... turns out I made a mistake and calculated for only a 5 gallon batch ... I was supposed to get 1.055 at 5 gallons and 75% efficiency. I ended up with 6 gallons at 1.054.

I changed the batch size and efficiency until I got my results. Did I actually get 88% efficiency??? No matter what, used a 5 gallon recipe and got 6 gallons at pretty close to the same gravity.

No other reasonable explanation. Hope it fit in the fermenter.
