Question: what kind of cost is involved in building a fermentation chamber? I can get a 7 cubic foot chest freezer delivered for $230. What would the supplies cost to build an equivalent size chamber, minus the price of the fridge? I'm a big fan of diy projects, just wondering which option is the most cost effective.

I bought a Magic Chef compact frig off Craigslist for $35. Went to HD and bought 2 sheets of 1/2" particle board, insulation, some hinges, latches, weather stripping... Bought an STC-1000+ for $30. Most everything else I had on hand.

If I had to guess, I'd say all in all, $150-$175 invested (including the frig) along with a couple of weekends for the build.

I built a cabinet in my garage for about $200. I bought a wire shelving unit and built the frame around. I insulated with fiberglass and used an STC to control the temp (with a space heater and air conditioner, respectively). At 40 odd cubit feet, I think it is a bargain for the the volume. On the other hand, a chest freezer might give you finer control. You only need to carefully control the temp for the first few days of fermentation. After that, if you keep it in the ball park, you're good to go.
