the article i read said its going to cost 15% more then regularly buying cans or bottles

For what it's worth it takes a 16 g cartridge. I had to jam a little tp in the bottom of the holder to get it to puncture, but it pressurized again. I just have some iodophore solution in it right now but I figured it could use a good sanitizing and it's the perfect size 1.5 gal for 1 tsp!!

just a quick thought what is the bottle made of (triangle number ?)

It's PET, 1 inside the triangle FYI

Does CO2 have any detrimental effects on iodophor?? Just curious don't want to kill a brew with my little experiment

Here is something I am curious on, but not sure:

When we go to re-use this.......would we just add uncarbonated beer, and let the CO2 cartridge fully carbonate it?

Would the CO2 cartridge be enough to carbonate that much beer and dispense it?

If not, I guess you would add sugar when you fill it up so it would create the carbonation, then the CO2 cartridge would just be used to maintain carbonation as well as help dispense!

I am not sure if when they initially filled it up, if they put in carbonated beer, and the CO2 cartridge was to help dispense it.......or if the beer was uncarbonated, and the CO2 cartridge was enough to carbonate AND dispense it?

very cool, i can't wait to get one up here to play with. I have been looking for portable systems to take on the boat. And didn't really want to pay for the TAD system.

ok...so, I am trying to re-use this as I am writing this!

I made a 5 gallon batch using malt extracts, and it was ready to bottle today!

I bottled most of it, then used the rest to put in the "home draft" container!

I checked to see how much priming sugar it would need first....added it......then filled it with beer (not all the way, obviously)!

Once it is close to being finished, I will see if I can find a CO2 cartridge that fits and give it a try!

Cool! Let me know how it comes out. I had put sanitizer in it just to test it and it's pretty much dead now and there's easily half the container left. The first few pulls off it I got carbonated santizer. I curious if you'll be able to dispense all of it since you are "bottle conditioning" in the container.

well, I don't have a CO2 cartridge in it, but it is dispensing beer out of it.

I think I had put a little more sugar in it and filled it up a little too much.

It was pretty hard when you tried squeezing the sides!

It is working!

My biggest question is can you do a secondary fermentation with the dispenser tap in place? Or do you need to use a screw cap like Tap A Draft and then add the dispenser after the secondary is complete?

Who knows so far?

I came home yesterday to find an empty Coors Light Home Draft contraption on my porch. So naturally, I took it inside and grabbed my trusty Leatherman. I got a new one, btw. The one with locking tools. Is good, ya. Anyway.

After monkeying with it a while, I got on HBT and found this here thread. Sure enough, the CO2 cartridge holder comes right off with the help of channel lock pliers.

The tamper proofing on it is weak sauce. It's two plastic tabs that squeeze in as they pass over some spline like teeth. The teeth go one way and when you try to turn against them, the plastic tabs grab onto the spline/teeth. Using the pliers breaks the plastic tabs. The holder and the tap are threaded. The holder screws back in fine. I'm betting the tab to spline/teeth deal is just tamper proofing to stop people from reusing it. Maybe use some thread tape or a washer to snug it up if you feel like it.

Is pellet gun or paint ball gun CO2 safe to use with something I'm going to drink?

Well this expirement has gone well. Did secondary fermentation with the stock dispenser in place and no leaks. Tapped an American Weizen over the weekend and this thing is working very well. Hoard these vessels while you can.

My neighbor works for Miller/Coors and he is good friends with the lady in charge of this product line here in CO. She and many of her friends have acknowledged the reuse opportunity of this product. The C02 holder can be unscrewed by hand or with pliers.

She did warn of using the C02 for paint guns/air rifles/pistols/bike inflators. You can find Food grade C02 at your local HBS, food service store or online. This is the 16 gram size. Having been in the medical field for a number of years, I would suggest spending the extra dollar to buy this as many contaminants can find their way into canisters and make dirty gas. Not that it WILL happen. But in CAN happen. You can use smaller cartridges but will have to fill the void of the smaller cartridge with something pretty firm like a piece of plastic or wood. Paper towel can get pushed out of the way and the gas will just leak out.

BTW the caps for the Tap-A-Draft system will work for your secondary fermentation. might prolong the life of the dispenser on the Coors Light Home Draft system.

Cheers-Alan

can you get these in Iowa??? I have not seen them were i live. What a suprise they still have 80s hair do's

well i just emptyed in and the tap came off easy and everyone is right channel locks or vice grips but it will work use sanistar or idaphor to clean it out and sanitize

Has anyone seen these in Iowa yet? I asked at the hy-vee and they said they didnt know if or when they would get them.

I hear tell that food grade CO2 cartridges of this size are available at adult bookstores. You know, porn stores. Whack shacks. Peep shows. Jack booths. Apparently, some people really like the smell of CO2 cause I'm told they sniff it. People are strange.

:p

That would be nitrous they use them for whip cream canasters. you know whippits. I dont believe they are the same thing

if you plan on reusing it, and your the one who bought it (or at least there when setting it up). can you unscrew the CO2 first, and modify it, so it doesnt break when you try to unscrew it after you use it?

Well, I should go see anyway, sub-zero. Just to be sure.

eppo, yeah, probably. If you mean to not use the CO2 cartridge to dispense the beer, you can unscrew the tap from the 'keg' jug and just pour the beer out. Don't know how carbonated it will be though.
