Have any of you tried transferring the ownership to a different name (for the actual membership and not the trustee)? If so, how did you do it and did they give you any grief?

I grant you, those 2 beers are delicious. Just thought the consensus was that members felt incredibly disappointed with the first year of membership.

I was dissapointed with Illuminating, but liked the other bottles. I had no problem with the membership and if it takes a month or two longer to get everything right, then I have no prob with the wait. Year one was a learning process and I am excited to see how the club grows.

As a first edition El Cat member I would say your assumption could not be farther from the truth, if you ask most of the El Cat members I know including myself they would tell you that Cigar City rocked it fairly well with the club.
Now if you want incredible disappointment you could try getting in the Funky Buddha Founder/ Snifter. Club that is a different story.

Good Gourd was solid, DB Huna.. well.. greatness. We also could buy 1 bottle of 110k batch 6, which I thought was very good. Yes, the other 3 were varying degrees of fail. Round 2 already looks substantially more promising.

The biggest miss in round 1 was amplitude being infected and subsequently releasing very few bottles that were good to go. That would have been a better drop than Illuminating or Don gavinos.

Having said that, yeah round 1 didn't impress me. Too many experiments not enough known quality. If the club is for 5 beers, then 3-4 of the 5 should be beers that most likely are to be highly successful, and then 1-2 experiment beers.

Fair enough. Happy to be wrong. Enjoy!

Amplitude was never infected. They found some bacteria on a holding tank. So they tested the beer. Was always a small 300 batch. Never intended to be more. ECC 1st edition was great. They tried new styles and gave us exactly what was promised and then some. 2nd edition is goi going to rock.

It was intended to be that small of a batch? I call BS.

Yea, not sure where Gene got that info...

Email from Justin when they first discovered the problem:

The contamination was initially discovered during our routine plating process and determined to be a lactobacillus species. The beer was kept cold to prevent spoilage while we decided what to do. When I came up with the idea to pasteurize it using the mash tun on the 15bbl system, I picked out 10 random bottles, plated them all on selective media, then re-capped and marked them. After pasteurizing everything, I retested those same bottles on the same type of media. All 10 showed growth before and none of the 10 showed growth after. We also did a test called hot boxing where I put a few of the bottles in the incubator to accelerate the growth and effects of any spoilage organisms. We did sensory analysis of those bottles and all tasted fine with no signs of spoilage. Based on that, we're all confident that the beer is clean and cleared for release"

I think that for people outside of the southeast you're right. I gave up my membership. There was one good beer in the entire batch and if I really wanted to try a DB Hunah I could pay less than $125 and a trustee box for it. I gave my membership up to someone else.

Anyone wanna upload what the email said?

EDIT: Never mind, found it:

What's different about this edition of the club?
We have made major changes to the way you monitor your membership and check out bottles in the tasting room. Once you renew your membership online, you will have access to your personal El Catador Club account. This account allows you to stay up-to-date on which bottles are available, which of your bottles have been signed out (and by whom), purchase additional products, change your trustee, and update your personal information at any time. Checking out bottles in the tasting room has been simplified to an easy search of your name on a tablet. As soon as your bottle is signed out, it will be reflected on your personal account.

Which bottles are guaranteed?
Barrel-aged Marshal Zhukov's Imperial Stout
Barrel-aged Caffè Americano Double Stout
A barrel-aged barley wine

What if I forget to renew before July 25th?
Your spot from the first edition will be forfeited. You can attempt to register when the open spots become available at a later date.

Can I give someone else my membership number to renew in my place?
No. The name and membership number must match our records from the first edition of El Catador Club. You can not transfer your membership number to someone else under any circumstances.
