Hi,
Im looking for something to shred my apples, something cheap but will do the job?
Or even something that I can possibly make myself.Any help would be great.
thanks

It's called a garbage disposal.

You might find this info i posted on an old thread helpful. (look at the videos at the bottom for the garbage disposal apple shreader.

How to Build a Cider Press

You can also make one out of an old Maytag washer evidently. (this article is awesome, especially if you are going to consistantly be doing large batches...)

THE MAYTAG CIDER PRESS

Here's another design....ReadyMade: CIDER PRESS

I can't show you, you have to be a Craft Subscriber to view the online edition, but they recommend a 30 dollar home depot garbage disposal mounted on a frame and emptying into a bucket to shred the apples prior to juicing and pressing, for those of you who don't have a free juicer...
like this...

This is cool too. But more work than a garbage disposal.

One of my friends' dad also uses a garbage disposal as a crusher. His is similar to the one in the 2nd video, with a round sink bolted to the disposal and mounted on a frame - except the sink is smaller and rounder so it works better as a hopper and the pommage goes straight down. I like the side mount in the video, looks easier to fill buckets although maybe harder to clean.

Not sure if it'll help you for this year, but building a grinder with an in-sink disposal is a nifty way to go, and isn't nearly as expensive as a boughten shredder! I ended up getting a pretty good extraction yield (14.9 lbs/gallon at 1.050) with the fine pulp that came out (of course, that could also be from them being juicier apples, too). The only downside I have, so far, is that the apples have to be cut up into quarters (at least) to fit into the grinder. Oh, and the motor can overheat if you run it too long (unless you modify it by attaching a different motor that'll run continuously, like the whizbang cider guy did). I just blew a fan on it, and that helped enough to get us through...

Video is from my first batch of 225 lbs of gravensteins:
