It Grows! This is year 3 and we're off to a good start. Should I trim it back yet or let it grow for a bit? I read somewhere that you don't want to let the first shoots climb up the rope.

Looking good! I'm planning to trim back my 2nd year hops to two or three bines per hop hill, but I'm no expert.

I'd pinch the small ones at no more than 25% of the total vegetative matter. Then wait a couple more weeks to see how it responds.

I keep the biggest/tallest and snip back the rest. Leave at least 4-6 bines.

I trimmed off about 25% of the vines, weeding out the weaker and guided 4 of the thicker vines to the wire. I'll report back in a week with pictures.

I live in Nor Cal...It's been cooler than usual summers. I wouldn't hesitate to cut those back. Keep one or two runners...You might see more develope later.

Also be sure to not neglect your phosphourous. Nitrogen is important but phosphours is also highly important.

You can use hop leaves like you would grape leaves for making stuffed greek appetizers
