Hi Guys

I typicaly rack after primary straight to the keg, then i "set and forget" to carb. My question is this,
do you think carbing the beer before its had a chance to sit and clear a bit, affects the clearing process,
Do the bubbles hinder clearing?
 
I'm no expert and would like to hear what others have to say about this...but I'm curious if you're chilling your beer in the keg prior to setting it on co2. I always let mine sit in the kegerator for a day prior to putting it on gas...with the exception of purging the headspace right after I seal the keg. I know that you use less co2 when carbonating cold beer and I would think this helps clarify as well.
 
If you're using "set and forget" with full cornelius style kegs it takes a good two weeks for the average beer to reach equilibrium.
That's ample time for the beer to brighten considerably, even if it wasn't cold-crashed before racking to the keg.
The first couple of pours will clear out a cone around the dip tube then should leave clear beer behind.

fwiw, I do cold-crash for a couple of days to drop the pellet mush from dry hopping before kegging, and the beer is fairly clear at that point.
The keg immediately goes in a fridge on gas until it's needed in the keezer...

yeah this was mostly just a curious question that popped into my head.
i cold crash the fermenter when its done, then straight to the keg, so yes Rob it is cold when the gas goes on. i may just be impatient

im using WLP810, san fran lager yeast, although this has lager charicteristics, its much more forgiving, and dosent really need to be "lagered" per se, but maybe i should quit "testing it" and let it sit for 2-4 weeks:(
 
What's your recipe and what temps did you ferment at? I just got a Grainfather and really want to make a lager but I'd have to lager in bottles or in a keg (which would take up valuable space in my kegerator. If you pulled off something lager-ish with your recipe I'd love to hear about it!

My daughter dosent like the smell when mashing and boiling, when she was 3, she said" daddy why you drinking dirty water"? :tank:
hence the name. lol

its a bit sweet when fresh, but like i said when it sits, it clears out, and gets real nice , i usually dont find this out till the last 2 or 3 glasses:mad:
it actually fits more of the helles catagory
finally, ive been reading some about wlp810, its supposed range is 58 to 65, but i think people have fermented it around 50, 55, and got more of a lager type beer
 
Thanks for the recipe...maybe I'll make it my second Grainfather brew. I LOVE helles...Hofbrau Original is one of my absolute favorite beers so this sounds perfect for me to try without necessarily doing a traditional lager phase. I have a cool Brewing jacket so I should be able to maintain those fermenting temps.

I am currently making my first Grainfather batch...Summer Nights Grapefruit Pale Ale and I must say that I'm loving this thing!
