I am working on an Avery Reverend clone and they list Cara 8 as one of the ingredients. Does this have another name? They also ask for Cara 20, which I understand is CaraVienne.

Thanks for any help.

it looks like cara8 is "Caramel Pils"

but if its easier to get I would just use crystal 10 & crystal 20

yeah cara 8 is carapils. I heard thats what they are calling carapils now. Its cara8. Carapils was 7.7 lovibond I guess Cara 8 is 8

Carapils or Caramel Pils? There's a difference. I'd go with Beezer on this one. I think Carapils is less than 2 lovibond whereas Caramel Pils is around 8 lovibond. The two will make very different contributions to your brew.

Maybe thats why its being called CARA 8 now.

Briess Carapils is like 1.2 L I think and Dingemans Carapils is like 7.7. I think Dingemanns is changing their carapils to cara 8 to avoid the conflict with Briess

Oh I have some Dingemanns Beligian CARAPILS and its says 7.7 L

It's actually Dingemans Caramel pils I'm pretty sure. The difference between the two is Caramel Pils contributes a slight caramel flavor and color. Carapils contributes very little in the way of color or flavor.

Dingemans Caramel Pils. 6° L. Caramel Pils is a halfway point between dextrin malt and true caramel malt. This grain differs from Briess Carapils in that Dingemans Caramel Pils contributes a subtle caramel flavor. The malting process creates a 'floury' endosperm that will yield fermentable sugars when mashed with diastatic malt. Steep Caramel Pils in quantities under a pound to add a light caramel flavor, but mash it with other grains for the full effect.

Dingemans changed the name of their Caramel Pils to Cara 8.

If your looking for Cara 8, use Caramel Pils, not Carapils.

Ok thanks Hooter. Dingemans Definitely used to call it just carapils though. I have the bag in front of me.

Yeah I've noticed most suppliers call it Caramel Pils (or Cara 8) but there's a few that mistakenly call it Carapils. It could be that the bag you've got has a label that was put there by the supplier. Many suppliers will buy in bulk and re-package with their own labels.

I've used both Carapils and Caramel Pils and can say from experience that there's a definite difference between the two. The clone recipe heywolfie is working on definitely calls for Caramel Pils.
