Every time I brew I run into a problem....well I guess not every time. The last time I brewed it went pretty well. I use the BIAB method. This time my bag caught my probe of my thermometer in my brew kettle. The bag ripped. Grain fell out....I got as much as I could but I still see little stuff in there. Any suggestions?

Pour the wort through an intact part of your bag into some other vessel to filter out the rest of the solids, then pour back into your kettle for the boil?

If you've already boiled, just let the junk settle out in the trub and hope you didn't boil out too many tannins.
 
Are you still preboil? If so, I would risk pouring it through whats left of you bag and strain out the grain. I would be more worried about extracting tannins from the grain then hot side aeration. The way I see it, your going to boil all of the o2 out of the wort anyways. Seems we should be more careful about post boil HSA. I have also been told, by a pro brewer, that HSA is a myth on the homebrew scale.
 
Yeah it's already boiling. I've been gradually scooping out the little bits of grains left with a mesh filter thingy(colander?). I'm just gonna roll with it now. Hope for the best. Now I need a new bag dag nabbit.....

The way I see it you could:

- Get a stronger bag
- Use a shorter "stubby" probe
- Mount some sort-of rounded object over it to prevent the bag from snagging
- Use a vertical thermometer
- Use a thermometer that has a wire on the probe that can be set in the mash or clipped to the bag

...probably a bunch of other ideas.
 
The only time I have a smooth brew day is when I prep and set up everything the night before, then brew first thing in the morning. Whenever I try and "brew on a whim" things always go wrong

I like the ideas. I do have a short probe, just not short enough I guess. I think the bag was pretty weak. I'll probably make my own this time. First bad buy....I think I'll try the rounded object idea, not sure what to use though

By the way this is an IPA. It's pretty hoppy. I hope the hops will cover most of the off flavors....back to the drawing board for the set up though

Maybe you could put a small round colander or spoon strainer in there to cover the stem. Anything smooth that would allow the liquid to pass through for accurate temperature monitoring. The weight of the grain might be enough to hold it in place. You could also try double-bagging it... :ban:

I BIAB. I use a candy thermometer and have never had a problem.

I would agree with the other suggestions and strain if you are preboil.
