I strongly urge you to NOT concider this.... There is too much to risk for trying to save a buck. Not only are you risking your health, you are risking your beer.

Even if it were a safe tank to use, at $35, you would need a new valve to work with your regulator.

Ok, so I jumped the gun on that one. Now the real question, is the co2 used by paintballers, welders, etc all the same and ok to use for kegging?

I get my tank filled at a welding supply shop. And I am fine! [drooling on self and keyboard while twitching slightly]

there are 2 grades of CO2... Medical, and everything else.

Most of us get our tanks filled at either a paintball field or welding supply.

Alot of welding supply places simply take your tank and give you a full one, and only refill yours if they are out of filled tanks that size. Paintball fields typically fill your tank while you wait.

just to add a little clarity, at the welding supply unless you specify that you want medical grade/ high purity (way expensive) you are getting standard CO2, and it wont hurt you any.

At a paintball store or fire extinguisher store they just fill with regular old CO2, no medical grade or high purity there.

Correct me if I am wrong, but don't you need a license or prescription to get any medical grade gas?

I think the main difference is Medical Grade gases are as pure as they can possibly be made. Everything else is still pretty danmed pure, but may have a few parts per million that are not.

Lucked up and found a friend who started collecting stuff for kegging years ago and still had his co2 tank. Got it from a soda vendor. No charge to me!

the one on the right is fine. take it somewhere to have a caustic cleaning done to it. its whats done to clean and purify o2 cyls before use.

you might end up spending more money getting it cleaned, and a new valve than it would cost to just buy one from one of the real cheap online vendors.

valves are going to be about $25. if its out of hydro test date its going to be another $20.

so now your up to $75. there are places where you can get brand new 5# for that price
