Hello friends,
I have some cool 32 oz. beer bottles (made to look like old moonshine jugs) that originally had screw-on lids. I figured out yesterday that the 38 mm lids like the local wine shop sells for 1 gallon jugs fits these old beer bottles and now I'd like to bottle my beer in them. Is there any reason they would not work?
Thanks!

Screw on caps seem to have a limited life. I was using some screw on pint bottles with good heavy plastic caps that came with them. After a certain number of uses I would have a few that would have trouble carbing. I bought replacement caps online. The aluminum replacements have a life of maybe two uses. The plastic have a longer life but are damn hard to twist off since they are smooth, they started failing too after a while. So, the short answer is yes they will work. But you will experience failure if you don't replace them continuously.

When I first started, I reused old Budweiser screw caps. Which also meant that I reused the old Bud bottles as well.
More recently, I've used the 40oz plastic Icehouse bottles. They work really well. But that was for fun experiments. I don't know if I'd actually use those for a serious beer.

And don't (I repeat) Do Not! Crimp pop top caps onto screw cap bottles. It will break the bottles.

I love the bottles. The cool thing is, I can get new 38mm caps for $1 for a 4-pack. If I can get even 2 uses out of each cap it is worth it to me because the jugs are so cool IMHO.

Interesting. I never really though about re-using twist-offs...now you put the thought in my head! lol

I have used the same bottle many times. Works well. Even cellar-ed for over a year and was still fine. Just make sure the caps have the rubber seals and not the cardboard.
