Camlock lug

Does anyone know what the lug with a hole on one of the hex flats on male camlock is for?

I use the similar lug on the end of a male plug to hang it off the handle of my kettle. When I'm done recirculating I hang my recirc hose from it.

It's for chain lashing a dust cap. It's an impractical carryover from the larger sizes such as those found on the side of tanker trucks. If you ever see a delivery happening at a gas station, you'll see the 3" dust caps hanging from the truck.

I'd debate the impractical carryover, keeping junk out of irrigation pipes is important and without securing the caps to the camlock, someone will always either drop them in the dirt or wander off with them in a pocket.

The carryover is impractical on 1/2" camlocks in our home breweries.
