Hey there, got about 12 AG batches under my belt and average cost for 50lb sack of 2row or Pale malt has been $36 here @ Northern Brewer in town, before Beer Barons discount. I hear alot about bulk grain purchases and would love to buy a years worth or more of grain in one shot but don't know who to hook up with or who to talk to to do so. Anyone willing to talk me through this or point me in the right direction? Many thanks!

I would start with a local homebrew club. If you got any micro breweries around talk to the brewer and they may order some up for you with their order so you can get in on their bulk discount.

with those prices locally, there is no need to try getting in on bulk grain buys.

our area is more on the lines of $60. a sack at LHBS specialty grains are 2.25- 2.60 per lb

Yeah, 50lb of two row or pale is $36 and specialty grains is $2 a lb.

If you live near Northern Brewer I wouldn't bother buying grain for a year. Buy a sack at a time and call it good.

If you can't hook into an already established group by you are sol. As this thread https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f14/north-country-malt-group-stop-selling-homebrewers-191682/ and other threads over the last few months have pointed out, ALL the maltser have stopped selling to new homebrewer customers. Only established customers can still buy for them, and there are stipulations. The michigan masher's group on here does 2 bulk buys a year, but from now on ONLY the two guys who ordered for us in the past few years, who's names are on the account can order for us, AND we must place at least one order a year by the end of Jan. or we will be taken off the "preferred customers" list and will never be able to buy from them again. I think the retailers felt we were undercutting their profits too much and lobbied the wholesalers to stop selling to us. So if you want to buy bulk you have to find an established group doing a buy, like a club or the subgroups on here, and get in through there. There will be no new bulk buys being setup....

Basically all of the malsters are one main group, mid county iirc. This is the notice they are all saying.

Dear Fletcher,

Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately our western warehouse system is not capable of handling sales to homebrewers. We recommend you ask your largest local homebrew store if they offer a full-bag discount. Best wishes for homebrewing success.

Cheers,

Milwaukee or Twin Cities? I just paid $63 (before AHA discount) for MO at Milwaukee's store. Didn't check 2-row but I didn't think it was that cheap. Normally MO is about $15 more per bag.

Probably Milwaukee since he mentions the Beer Barons, and yes the Beer Barons do get a 10% discount at NB and several other area LHBS.

I did not realize Country Malt Group stopped that policy. That sucks. Nothing against my LHBS, but why do they want to be in the bulk grain sale business to begin with if they can't compete economically. Next thing you know they'll pressure the local welding supply businesses to stop refilling CO2 tanks so they can do it at twice the price. Makes no sense. Do what you do well, which is specialty grains, non-bulk base malts, and everything else that goes into brewing that we can't source somewhere else more economically, including our time spent.

FYI...I buy my bulk grain from Austin Homebrew Supply. Maybe not the best prices but FREE Shipping on purchases over 100 dollars. I can't find a cheaper, delivered price to my door for bulk grain.
