i just brewed a chocolate maple porter from Brooklyn brew shop, everything went according to plan but i threw out the package that it came in and i was wondering if anyone knew the official gravity statistics for their cm. porter?
i just bottled it and my final gravity came to 1.26, if i was reading my hydrometer correctly
now that i'm looking at my notes on my readings i took i'm thinking i screwed things up... tell me what you guys think
initial grav = 1.06 on 3/31/11
final grav = 1.26 on 4/21/11

does this seem right?
im skeptical that read my initial correctly... im pretty sure i read the final correctly

That doesn't seem right either.

When did you take your gravity readings?

On 3/31/11, the reading was 1.006? Was the sample taken from the full 5 gallon wort, pre-pitching?

On 4/21/11, I can only assume that this was taken after fermentation.

Your gravity reading will go down. It starts high because you have sugar in the wort. The yeast eat the sugar and turn it into gas and alcohol. There will be less sugar in the wort after fermentation which is why your gravity reading will be less.

yes 1.006 was full 5 gal. wort, pre-pitch
4/21 (today) was 1.016

i understand the principal, im just obviously screwing up reading my hydrometer i think
thanks for the help 22

Yeah 1.06 is a much better OG reading on a porter and 1.016 would seem to be a good final gravity reading for that. That would be 5.7% abv
