Does anybody have any thoughts about Brew Your Own Magazine? What about the Beginners Guide? I did enjoy browsing the website, but didn't know if I should buy their guides or not.

I got a subscription as a gift this past X-mas. I really enjoyed the first issue I received. The second issue I wasn't into as much... I think it just depends on the topics and beers covered. I have a feeling I'll renew when the time comes. From what I know, the clone recipes they feature are right on... having said that, I haven't brewed one yet. :)

Can't shed any light on the beginners guide.

I like it. Some interesting articles, some not. I guess that’s to be expected from any magazine. Haven’t seen the beginners guide, but if you’ve read Palmers book, I think you’re pretty much good to go. I did order the 250 Clone magazine that does not come with a subscription, and it’s defiantly worth the money. I’ve got a lot of brewing to do!

I've been a subscriber for 2 years, I think it's a good resource. But in a lot of ways WE here are ahead of the curve. Some of the things that they are only now coming to write about we've been doing for three years, i.e. long primaries. Now they are accepting it a valid.

Yes, that is one of the best things out there. Not just the recipes, but the introduction on how to "deconstruct" a beer. You can learn a lot about recipe creation, and brewing in general from that.

One year...very happy. Good reading. I don't brew the recipes, but employ them as a guide for my own. Usually good articles. I'm happy!

I like their magazines, they put out a lot of good clone recipes that I'm eager to try eventually, but as others say they tend to be hit or miss. You either find an article that really interests you or its just kind of boring. As far as their beginner guide they essentially allocate 2 pages to each topic such as extract brewing, then partial mash and all grain, bearing in mind half of it is saved for winemaking too. It's good for a basic overview but I'd say spend the extra cash and buy Palmers book as it goes way more in depth.

Palmers book is free on the internet why spend extra money... and that is sans pirating. Just Google "How To Brew". On the first link there is a link to a fully web published version from John himself. Although if it came to it the knowledge is priceless.

I just ordered a year subscription the other day and the confirmation email said to expect my first issue sometime between August 9th and September 9th  If I had known it would take that long I probably wouldn't have subscribed...

it always takes 6-12 weeks to receive the first issue of any mag subscription. Sept 9th does seem excessive tho.

I've found it to be a pretty useful resource. I haven't used any of the recipes inside to comment on those though. I do keep their hop guide issue handy though, there is a lot of good information in it.

I get it and think it's great. Would probably even put it above Zymurgy. There is also a ton of great info if you dig around on their site, even though that thing is in terrible need of a redesign.

Just want to point out that the free version is the 1st edition of his book and he's on the 3rd now, which includes some important additions. I'd recommend buying the updated physical version. Plus it's no fun trying to read a laptop by the pool :D

Good magazine , as u progress in brewing u can go back and reread articles that didnt but now do purtain to ur brewing say extract to partial to all grain.

I like the magazine. I have brewed at least two of their replicator recipes, and they were both top notch. I hate to say it, but don't throw them away. They have a ton of information that you will go back to.
