Does anyone have a suggestion on a good thermometer that will stand up to sanitizer etc for brewing? Star San killed my oven probe thermometer when I immersed the detachable probe in it, and my roommate killed "pocket" digital thermometer by putting it in the dishwasher. Grrrrrr... I should put his computer in the dishwasher, it makes about as much sense.

Anyone have a probe thermometer with a probe that can stand being immersed in Star San? Or should I go old school and get a alcohol or mercury thermometer?

Man, this has been an enigma for me since I started brewing, I can't find a thermometer that I trust to nail down temps for anything. I did find a solution that has helped though, but it isn't something that can be left inside a mashtun or anything like that. But so far this one has lasted me quite a while and is extremely accurate.

I got one at linens 'n things for 15 dollars. It is waterproof so it has help up to my brewing needs quite well. I've been meaning to go back and get another one as a backup.

What's wrong with a standard long stem dial thermometer? Reads from 0F to 220F and costs about $10.00. Should last a lifetime.

I have a similar one... I dont know if its by the same manufacture, but it looks exactly the same... mine has started to loose segments of the digital display after a few months... but I cant complain, it was cheap... good luck..

I bought a programmable oven thermometer for around $20. I set it to go off when the water gets to 145 so I can get ready to add steeping grains. You can use it to let you know when you water is close to boiling, when it is chilled from the wort chiller, etc... wish I would have bought it ten years ago

Most long stem metal analogue thermometers are not that accurate for mashing.

I got a decent digital thermometer off ebay for like $20. It's chrome and waterproof. Seems to read just fine. I would not suggest putting in the dishwasher though. if you want one with a remote probe, it's not going to work for you.
