OK, so I made a minor miscalculation today. I planned on creating a 3 gal test brew using a yeast starter I made from Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat. I bought my ingredients last week:
5 lbs moravian pilsner
8oz Vienna malt
8oz crystal 20l

Thought I had 2oz of saaz hops on hand buuuuuut......when begining my boil I realized I only had .5oz left!! A brew shop at least 30 min away and 30 min from closing, pot boiling, 2 beers over the legal limit, rats.

So I remember I had a can of Mr. Beer west coast pale ale, pre hopped. I was desperate and tossed it in:drunk: I still addedmy .5oz of saaz at the 60min portion of my 90min boil but what do you guys think? Am I boned:( How do you forget the hops?? I completly forgot to check what was in my mini fridge!

You'll still get beer. It may not be what you were looking for but you'll certainly end up with beer!
Rdwhahb?

Do you have any other variety of hops in the freezer, or was the saaz all you had?

Who knows, you might get lucky on this one! If that happened to me and that's what I had, I might have done the same. Probably be better than the Mr. Beer kit by itself. Let us know how it turns out!

When did you add the Mr. Beer can in?

Sloose: Thanks for the encouragement!
Staffbir: That was all I had left was the .5oz of saaz. I usually keep a few varieties for just such occasions but I guess somewhere in between that I used up my stock? I have been so focused on washing and stocking my yeast I completely forgot the hops? I tasted the wort post boil and its a little sweet but not bad so I may be onto something. I will just have to wait until the holidays to find out?
ChessRockwell: I added the malt at the 60 min mark of the boil, out of 90 min. I waited until the malt started to breakdown and boil began again, then threw in the saaz about 10 min after. It didnt have a strong hop smell, very slight. I almost threw some nutmeg and cinnamon in since the beer started to turn pretty dark but I thought better of it. I may dry hop but my OG was 1.065! The original recipe I made was for about 1.054 so a huge difference. I am hoping it will turn out well.
Oakbarn: I liked what I tasted post boil. Not my usual hoppy beer but not bad either. Maybe I will get some kicka** spice flavors from the Leinenkugel Sunset wheat yeast? I will definitely let everyone know how it turns out. Looks like it will need to age for awhile longer than I planned now but thats not a bad thing>:)

My only worry is that I created a starter from my Leinenkugel Sunset wheat based on an og of 1.054ish and now I am 10pts over that. Luckily, I have three more beers left so I could create another starter if my fermentation gets stuck? Other than that, time will tell. Im glad I am not the only one who has made this mistake. I almost sh** myself!!

I wonder if maybe this might be a reason to create some kind of 'brewing first aid kit'.....four or five varieties of hops in the fridge, some DME and a packet of Nottingham just in case anyone missed or goofed something.....?

You know, the sad part is I checked my dme to see if I had enough left and got more! Just to be sure! Yes a first aid kit would be great. But I order in bulk to avoid these issues and this one, Jakeintoledo, was me being stupid. I usually check but this time i dropped the ball. It's all good. The batch was a trial run any way. Now I get to brew another batch and the wife will understand:ban:

Wow! How did you get so low on hops? I also buy in bulk and have about a dozen varieties and several pounds total in the freezer.

As said you will get beer. The sad thing is if it turns out good there is no way to duplicate it.

Sounds like time for another bulk order!:mug:

Well I live in a small space so I keep my dry supplies limited to what I can fit in my mini fridge+room for a 3gallon fermenter. I have started doing lagers but I have to limit them to 3 gallons, for now so there is most of my previous space I relied on.

My ales I can do inside and at the 5+gal. I have the cool-brewing fermentation cooler so that helps but mini-fridge=mini supply stock. I have some yeast in the fridge inside but very few. The wife would start to complain about how much I invest into my beer and I aint ready to hear that:rockin:

I think after this last debacle, I will probably get some tupperware and keep them inside somewhere? Although I think I will be pleasantly surprised with the outcome...the wort did taste good post boil. All I can do is laugh!
