There's an on-going debate between SWMBO nd myself over how to serve beer.
She understands the reasoning over serving my homebrews in a glass, but gives me grief when I pour stroe-bought beer into a glass, preferring it in the bottle. I've tried explaining the reasons, hop aroma, head, etc., but she still scoffs at me.

I'm just wondering what everyone here prefers.

Glass.....

It's NOT about the yeast in bottle conditioned beer, it's about the flavor and nose, just like wine...that's why there's so many different types of beer glasses...In fact there are more different types of beer glasses than there are wine glasses.

Check out the ones for Belgian Beers alone...https://globalbeer.3dcartstores.com/Glasses_c_36.html

That's the ultimate beer glass porn site...

It's about letting the CO2 rise and carry the great aromas to your nose, and so all the flavors hit your mouth correctly....

When I'm reviewing a beer I uses a belgian snifter, to get the best smell and taste I can out of it.

Heck a commercial beer, especially an expensive micro brew deserves to have it's best features brought forth...Even a bmc will be at it's best in the right style glass....

glass.

I do not drink ANY beer out of a bottle or can. even el cheapo beers like PBR and busch get a glass.

although I am a little weird, as I drink most beverages (beer, soda, other) at or only slightly below room temperature.

GLASS

I even pour crap beer in a glass.

If nothing else you can drink it faster.

Glass. If you don't want to smell your beer, are you sure you want to drink it?

I often even carry a glass with me if I am going some place I expect I will not have some sort of cup available. I'm weird in all sorts of ways, so folks hardly even notice. :)

There are times to drink from the bottle... but they are few and far between. I'm still trying to train the local restaurants that they need to bring me a glass with my beer. (This was a very new joint "Barley House" which has 250 different beers, I had to ask twice for a glass!)

You should talk to a manager at that place and inform them their servers should be bringing non chilled glasses.

Always in a glass for me, and a goblet style if it's available.

I get the stink eye all the time from barkeeps when I turn back a frozen glass. Sorry, but I want to actually taste my beer. If I was trying to kill the flavor, I'll order water.

True, I just decided to give it a couple months so they've worked out the kinks (food was Ok, my wife's burger was better than may steak though...) If it happens again I will have a talk with the manager.

What the hell kinda question is that on a homebrew forum??? Come on people, you HAVE to pour it out in a glass. Just recently, I grabbed a SN Torpedo Ale from the fridge and just for kicks tried it out of the bottle, for old time sake. Wow, totally different beer and not in a good way. Overly bitter, little hop character, and fairly bland other than that. However, pour that thing out in a glass....BAM! I could smell the hops and the malt and the bitterness was nicely offset by the body of the beer. You've corrupted me HBT members, never again will I drink out of a bottle when possible.

Here's a compromise.....:

Just take your wife's beer bottle but rather than un cap it, flip it over and hack off the bottom with a machete.

I stole this from another forum:
The evolution of glassware.

1. starts with a pint or a mug
2. puts pint and/or mug in freezer
3. has a freezer full of pints and mugs
4. starts getting a cupboard full of glasses including the ones in the freezer
5. takes remaining glasses out of freezer
6. complains to self about not having a tulip at home.
7. gets a tulip.
8. wonders why he/she has so many pint glasses and mugs when there's so few beers that are recommended to be served in said glasses.

Did I miss anything?

When I'm at a bar, the bartender always looks at me angrily when I ask for a glass for my beer. After all, I just gave him/her another dish to wash. Then they look at me like I'm some kind of weirdo when I smell my beer before I drink it.

the right beer in the right glass, at the right temp, will totaly change the flavor of the beer. I was a bottle man for many years, then i spent a week in Amsterdamn, most of it in bars, and got a great education in beers/glasses/temps that blew my mind. Some beers need to be cold, some need to be warm, and some will go from great to nasty by just changing the glass.

Would she drink wine from the bottle? "Your Honor, the defense rests." :D

I voted What the ... because ofcourse you have to enjoy beer in a glass. What kind of barbarian are you? :D

Well I guess drinking flavorless macro brew would seem even more flavorless when chugging it from a bottle, so maybe there is a point.

I was at outback and ordered a 4.50 New Castle.. came out waaaaaayyyyy too cold.. everyone at the table thought I was weird for waiting 15 min to drink it..

They actually over carb beers in bottles and cans so that it become correct when you pour it into a glass. Every beer is meant to be poured into a glass. That's just the way the beer is designed. Tell her the brewmaster made the beer to be poured into a glass.

Glass. Sometimes when I'm working in the garage, I'll have one out of the bottle, but most times I have some disposable plastic glasses out there and would rather drink out of those than the bottle.

The bottle rule only applies to cheaper beers like Fat Tire or Alaskan Amber, it'd be a cold day in hell before I drank Bigfoot Barleywine out of a bottle.

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm honestly not surprised at all by any of the responses, except MAYBE the Gnome's last post. The entire point behind this thread was to get across the fact that there IS a solid reasoning behind my glass usage, and it's not just to avoid the yeast farts.

Oh, and to answer the questions about drinking wine, she HATES wine, although I AM trying to introduce her to Mead, since she loves honey.
