How much head space do I need to leave in bomber bottles? Same as the 12 oz bottles or a bit more?

I find that the space left after removing the bottling wand is the perfect amount of head space, be it bombers, 12 oz. bottles, 1 liter swing tops, etc.

I do believe it is exactly the same regardles of the size of the bottle, like ace said if you are using a bottling wand properly, then it is giving you the correct headspace.

That should make it easy then. Planning a barleywine, and I'd like to bottle in some 22 ouncers. Any source for moderately priced beer in this size? Also, will regular caps fit the wider necked ones (29mm i think)?

Just go to your favorite liquor store and try and find some that are moderately priced. Prices vary, so it's hard to give you any definite answers. For me, SN Harvest Ales are only $4.99 for 24 oz. bottles.

As for the caps, you should be fine with most bombers. The only place you may run into a fit-up issue is if you are using bottles that come with Belgian-style cork enclosures. These are typically (but not always) made to accept the larger crown cap, and not the kind you typically buy from your LHBS.

At my bottle shops the cheapest Bombers I've seen are from Lagunitus. Trouble is, some are twist offs, and some are crimpable, and I couldn't tell you which is which though. They are in the under 5 bucks range.

My favorite new larger bottle is the 625ml Lions Stout bottle, that's what I'm going to use for my 5 year aged barleywine.

In Michigan those are 3 bucks and change for a bottle of one of the best stouts I've ever had.
