Have been using a 1" blow-out tube with my 6.5 gallon glass carboy. I just got a 6 gallon better bottle yesterday and was planning on brewing this Saturday. Want to get a blow-out tube for it but what size would fit in the neck? Or what other quick options do I have? I don't want to have to order anything online because I want to brew Saturday.

I do have a stopper and 3-piece airlock for the BB, but would rather a blow-out tube for the first part of fermentation.

I use an orange carboy cap and some small diameter (like racking cane size) tubing. You can also attach tubing to the 3-piece airlock, just remove the two pieces (cup and cap) and put tubing on the thing sticking up...

Do you know what size tube you use on the stick in the middle of the airlock?

I don't have an orange carboy cap, but I need a good blow-out tube. I've been getting massive blow-outs on my last batches in 6.5gallon carboys so this 6 might have one.

Keep it in a keg tub or a cooler with some blue ice things. I quit having blowoff once I started keeping the temps in the mid 60s. I have a 'red rocket IIPA' pitched with 2 packs of S-05. Just remember to change the blue ice packs out when the water temp gets up to 64 or 65. Once it starts slowing down let the temps rise up to 68 or 70 at the highest to make sure it finishes strong.

Well, it's a Belgian so I was going to start it in the 70s

I probably have 20 bottles in the freezer for temp control of my tub. Have an Oatmeal stout in there currently and keeping the temps 65ish. Gallon of mead doing the same in a bucket.

touche.

You did say that you have been having a lot of blowoff, do you keep non-Belgian beers at cooler temps and still have blowoff?

Maybe I am doing something wrong?

I just stick a tube onto the airlock. I remove the lid and the insert, and it goes right on that center post. I think it's the same size tube that fits on my autosiphon, I forget exactly though.

You'll need to drill a #10 stopper with a 1" hole. The other suggestions above are much easier. I had the same question not too long ago. I went with the orange carboy cap and 1/4" diameter hose.

I've not had any blow-off on cooler temp fermentations in the 6.5 gal carboy. The 5 gallon is a different story. It's really the Belgian beers, or any beer at 70+

This is what I use...

3 piece airlock and tubing with some plastic wrap to make the seal.
