I just tasted my first batch of homebrew (autumn amber ale) and though it tasted good I noticed it didn't have much smell or after taste. What might I have done wrong?

Do what Homercidal said, and also let us know how long it fermented and how long it was in the bottle before tasting.

Talking with a Co worker that homebrews mentioned he thinks my problem stems from my brew kettle being small and having to add alot of water to fill my five gallon bucket. Is there ratio of water added I should use?

Welcome to HBT.

The closer you get to a full-boil batch (6-7 gallons), the better you can control all the things that influence brewing. However, there are folks that love no-boil kits, where essentially you're adding pre-hopped syrup to hot water, pitching yeast and calling it beer.

So, you make a gallon or two of very strong wort, then add 3 gallons of top-off water ? - many folks do that with reasonable results.

post your recipe and your process and we'll help determine what might have gone wrong.
