Just bought "The Thief". The directions say it's ok to return the sample, but everything I've read says not to. I'm assuming that if everything that comes in contact with the beer is cleaned and sanitized then it probably is alright to return. Does this make sense, or are the makers of The Thief out to get me!?!?!?

If everything is sanitized then yah it should be fine, but why risk it? Just drink the sample and learn what the various stages of beer taste like. It's an educational process that's worth the time.

Yeah, I don't bother returning the sample. Just drink it after taking my hydro reading. In theory, if everything is sanitized there should be no risk, but I just choose to not even worry about it, plus I just like tasting the progress and being able to compare the finished product to the early stages.

Rinse and sanitize your Thief inside and out and the hydrometer. The Thief is made so you can draw a sample and drain it back into the fermenter, without splashing or fumbling with anything.

And depending on when you're taking samples, active yeast and increasing levels of alcohol will begin to make it difficult for ickies to set up shop.
