I have a horizontal 3 keg brewing system and I use the batch sparge method. I have been using my pump to introduce the sparge water into the mash kettle through the bottom pick up tube vs. dumping it in the top. Are there any negative's to this method?

Do you stir the mash after adding sparge water and before the vorlauf? If so, I don't think it would really matter which direction the water was introduced from. If not, then I think you'd be leaving sugars behind.

As long as you stir well enough to homogenize the mash, then how the water was introduced doesn't matter.

Brew on :mug:

This is how I introduce sparge water to my mash tun and find its an easier way to ensure all the grain is getting mixed with the water.
