Does 'Barley Malt' have any uses for homebrewing?

I recently purchased 5lbs of it (90% barley malt, 10% maltodextrin) at $0.95 a pound. I wasn't sure if it had any uses for brewing, but as it was cheap I bought it anyways. So now that I have it, what can I do with it??

I don't see why you couldn't use it, but two caveats come to mind. 1. You don't know the malt source. It could be 6-row, 2-row, how it was malted, how it was mashed, etc. So, you don't know how it would taste... and 2. It contains 10 % maltodextrin, which is unfermentable. So any beer you would make would have a limit of attenuation. If I were you, I'd maybe use it for starters.

You could use it anywhere you use DME, provided the extra body from the MD isn't a problem. Anything on the dark side would work, except a Schwartzbier, maybe.

I will brew a small DME 3 gallon batch with some of the barley malt tonight. Probably do a porter or maybe a stout (?).

Thanks for your help!

Barley malt? I bet I could make a beer from barley malt! There's probably some culture out there that's done it.:p
