I want to a a ball valve and sight glass to a hlt and my boiling kettle. However when i spoke to the guy at my home brew shop he said it is not a good idea to do it as i want to as i will be sucking in too much air when sparging. Correct. Sight glasses don't work when you are flowing past the lower fitting due to a slight venturi effect. You will not be able to read an accurate level while draining.

He was more worried about oxidation though. Any thoughts?

Well...you could make a rubber plug for the top of your sight glass when you're draining from the valve. The sight glass will be useless for reading volumes as you're draining, but that shouldn't be a problem.
