So I kegged my new batch today and I noticed a hissing noise coming from the ball lock gas disconnect. After replacing the post o ring with no success. I immediately went to my home brew shop to replace the disconnect. The experienced guy there said there is no real sealing function on the disconnect and it is most likely the pop it. He discouraged me from wasting my money on another new disconnect. I bought one anyways with the pop it he recommend. Long story short, I get home and put on the new disconnect and bam, problem solved. What could of possible gone wrong with a one month old ball lock gas disconnect to cause it to leak?

A bad poppet or poppet seal could cause it. I have 1 set of spare disconnects, but have never replaced one on any of my 12 kegs. Usually it is the post o-ring, diptube o-ring or the poppet that need to be replaced.

Perhaps when installing the new disconnect it moved and made a better deal with post o-ring? Do you use keg lube on your seals? If not I'd try that with the old disconnect and I'd imagine it would seal again also.

I had the same problem about a week ago, ended up with an empty CO2 tank because of it. The problem in my case was user error: I tried to clean, sanitize, fill and quick carb a keg all while my son was napping. In doing so I accidentally jammed the Gas QD onto the Beer Out Post. I was able to pop it back off and it looked OK but I ended up doing some damage to the QD and it never sealed properly. I was debating not leaving it on there but I didn't have another one and after fiddling with it I thought I got it to seal properly... I was wrong.

Is there anyway you accidentally damaged your QD even though it wasn't very old?

So when the leak happened I re lubricated the o ring, inspected the disconnect and I could not get it to seal. Small hissing noise from that area. I then replaced the o ring on poppit with a brand new one and re lubed, still a leak! I head to the local store and bought a new disconnect, come home insert it on, no leak. I just don't get how that is possible with what everyone is saying.

Also keep in mind I obviously tried to get it to seal multiple times with the first disconnect and nothing worked (even with both o rings) what really chaps my rear is this was a brand new keg and a brand new kegerator system. Only used for one batch prior to this incident.

Check the threaded cap on the leaky disconnect to see if it's loose.
If it's tight, remove it and see if the black gasket is missing...

Cheers!

[ps: the plunger shown in the picture is up-side-down]

Sorry to resurrect, but wanted to add a solution, not mentioned here that worked for me. The gas post on my ball lock keg has a small tangentially oriented notch in the hex flats at the base of the post. I had put my gas post on the beer side and vice-versa. This is what was causing the gas QD to leak. Reversed it and no leaks. Hope this helps someone!
