How far from the end of the tubing should the ferrules sit? Also I am assuming it is ok to disconnect/reconnect the coil from time to time?

Simply set your compression fitting by inserting your tube all the way into the joint, it will hit a stop. Tighten the compression nut and the ferruls will set themselves, bulging the tube slightly and fixing them permanently in place making a leak proof seal.

Once you've done that you can disconnect the compression nut whenever you would like for cleaning or whatever. Just reattach tightly when reassembling.
