When I first started researching sanatizers I read somewhere that Iodophor was originally used in the dairy industry, so I looked at Fleet Farm and found this product http://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?id=23893. I think it was a gallon jug for about $7.00 a heck of a lot cheaper than the $5.00 I spent for 4.0 oz. Has anybody else seen this or tried it?

I have no chemical background, but isn't iodine iodine? Granted this stuff probably isn't as concentrated as Iodophor but it can't be that much different. Are homebrewers getting hosed?

If you ask me the real rip-off is "priming sugar".

How so my friend? I've never stumbled up corn sugar anywhere else. Yeah you can use white sugar, but I've never seen corn sugar outside of my LHBS.

Now don't get me started on "Belgian Candi Sugar." That's the one where the Belgians laugh at us silly homebrewers. LOL.

Check your local hippie health food store... Corn sugar, AKA Dextrose... I get a 4 pound bag of it for about $4.

I can get a 4 pound bag of priming sugar at midwest supplies for about 5 bucks seems a little high but not exactly what I would call geting hosed.
 
So why DO mennonites and hippies use dextrse anyway? Sounds like a joke. Lol.

It has different properties than sucrose that people take advantage of when baking and cooking. For example, sucrose starts to caramelize BEFORE its melting temperature (which is why you have to tend it so closely when making caramel), whereas dextrose caramelizes only after its melting temperature...and, due to the fact that dextrose usually comes in monohydrate form, will actually dissolve without the need to add water before it reaches its melting point. It's really just an easy sugar to deal with all around.

Most decent bodybuilding/fitness supplement shops should have it too. I make post-workout shakes with maltodextrin and dextrose. I would buy 10lb tubs of dextrose way before I got into homebrewing.

But honestly, the price for dextrose at my LHBS was better. Bodybuilding.com has 10lbs of dextrose for $22.99. I think I paid $7 for 6lbs at my LHBS.
