Beer Dust is a relatively new water conditioner additive I saw in Zymurgy which is available for several different beer styles like IPA and Pale Ale. You start with RO or distilled water and add a packet to the mash water or if you aren't mashing add it to the boil kettle.

It looks intriguing and is reasonably cheap at $5 for 5 gallons but I don't know anyone in my brewclub who has tried it yet. Is there anyone in HBT-land who has given it a go who cares to report how well it did or didn't work?

Instead of spending $5 over and over I would recommend you download Brun Water. It will give you much more flexibility and you will only spend a few cents per batch.

I'm sure it's a blend of gypsum, CaCl, and maybe some MgSO4...

Without knowing grain bills and water volumes, you'd be better off (in my opinion), just following the water primer here on HBT:

$5 will get you enough gypsum and CaCl for maybe dozens of batches...

EDIT: disclaimer - I'm just pissed I didn't come up with the idea for beer dust.

There's another similar product called ACCUMash so perhaps there's room for a third one from you?

I have used it and found that it made a large difference in my beer. I actually won 2 gold medals with my IPA using BeerDust.. I didn't realize my water was causing the problems....

I am happy to discuss.. but truly the $5 for the best beer I can make .. is worth it!!

A positive testimonial, thanks. Though, I do wonder about the coincidence between your username here and beerdust co-founder Mike Lebben.

Congrats! Which comp(s)?

Another option is to just learn the very basics of water chemistry and buy $5 worth of CaCl and gypsum that'll last you 50 batches...

To be fair, he did say he was 'happy to discuss' so maybe it was a honest mistake not mentioning his relationship with the company. Maybe I'm just be 'generous' in thinking that :)

That being said, its really not rocket science to use something like BrunWater to figure out your water chemistry adjustments, so this product wouldn't be anything I'd be interested in, but I see why some folks might want to pay for the convenience.

I can do the same with 30 cents worth of chemicals weighed on my hop scale(it will do grams)

"I didn't realize my water was causing the problems... But I created a solution for it anyway!"

LOL!

I wasn't even a thought yet in '91.

Hilarious, you'd think he would choose a less obvious name...

The LHBS I work at has pre measured salts for RO/distilled water. Three water profiles (hoppy, balanced, dark). We charge 50 cents per 5 gallons LOL

I was 32. :)

As was I. And preggers with number 2 for most of it!

We've been dialling in our equipment and process, making some consistently nice brews. I decided, after making the last batch of pale ale and our first IPA, that we need to work on our water. Seems well suited for maltier brews but the hoppy stuff is a bit anemic. We usually mix 5 or 6 parts RO with 1 or 2 parts softened and 1 part filtered well water. Our well water is fairly hard and mineral-y.

That's actually a great idea for newer brewers!

My lhbs only tries to not make eye contact...
