Hi everyone. I'm finally giving homebrew a shot on my own after having a bit of experience on and off working with friends and family who were into the hobby. Currently have an Irish Red kit from midwest in the secondary, which I'm anxious to finish up and try out in my newly refitted kegerator. I also figured a blog would be a great way to try and document my experiences since I'm a computer nerd by nature. Just a quick rundown of the kegerator mods up so far, but I hope to be able to provide some interesting or at least entertaining content moving forward at www.brewingchicago.com

I look forward to getting to know everyone and to making some delicious beer.

Just for future reference...there's no need to use a secondary with beers like Irish Reds. Anything under 1.060ish is usually good to go with 3-4 weeks in primary. Even with bigger beers, I suggest leaving them in primary for 3-4 weeks.

I use that schedule for everything except IPAs and wheats, which I only leave in primary for 2 weeks.

Welcome to the site!

Welcome! Hey I see that Rockford reference- My brother-in-law is the announcer for the Icehogs. You guys have a pretty neat homebrew/hydroponic shop there in town considering the size of your population.

It's gotten a lot better in the past year or so. It's a franchise, and the company expanded, bringing in new products. I can get just about anything I need there as far as ingredients goes... I still buy equipment online.
